Access control solution for the Enedis substation

EDF subsidiary Enedis supplies electricity from power transformers (substations) right through to the consumer's electric meter. In 2016, the Group chose the Locken solution for its substations across half the national grid. In 2018, they approved plans to upgrade to second-generation electronic keys, which instantly open the cylinder and prevent the risk of contact failure through contactless technology. Roll-out will conclude in 2019 for approximately 1,100 sites.

Importance of access control on sensitive sites such as Enedis

Substations transform electricity from the high-voltage lines (90,000 and 225,000 V) into medium-voltage electricity (20,000 V). These high-security sites feature two to four external access points, and any intrusions could be disastrous. From now on, agents will be given a single key with all of their ad hoc access rights. Maxime Leboeuf, Project Manager at Enedis explains:

Locken's electronic access management system radically minimises the risks of any intrusion. It’s significantly easier to manage access for both Enedis officers and subcontractors as we can now grant access for given time periods in specific areas

Maxime Leboeuf, Project Manager at Enedis

Maxime Leboeuf continues on the benefits of the solution : “The system gives an invaluable boost to access point manageability as most substations must also be accessible to RTE (an EDF subsidiary) officers when working on very high-voltage lines,” he says, highlighting other advantages of the solution. “In addition, access rights are activated for 24 hours and updated every day through ARDs (access right distributors), allowing us to spring straight into action in the event of a crisis.”

Induction technology: major innovation

Locken’s electronic key access control solution is based on the contactless induction technology patented by the Iseo Group. Advantages for the user include the fastest opening times of any wireless access control system and exceptional ruggedness with no contact between the key and cylinder.
