LOCKEN signs a major agreement with UK Power Networks to secure its electricity supply infrastructures.
Initiated to coincide with the London Olympics, deployment of the LOCKEN access control system continues, and will eventually equip more than 1,500 power distribution facilities in England.

UK Power Networks is the power distribution operator for London and the South East of England. The three networks operated by UK Power Networks use more than 100,000 miles of underground cables and overhead power lines, a distance approximately equivalent to four times the circumference of the Earth.

Exceptionally stringent security measures

To ensure compliance with the very tight security measures imposed by the Olympics Organization and to provide a power supply network capable of delivering maximum performance, UK Power Networks put its trust in LOCKEN.
But over and above the needs for the Olympics, reliable power supply - especially for critical infrastructures like airports, rail networks and industry - is absolutely essential to the nation, and the decision by UK Power Networks to tighten security and upgrade its maintenance systems is all part of achieving that reliability.

More than 1,500 sub-stations

Ultimately, LOCKEN secure access control solution will be installed in more than 1,500 power distribution facilities in London and throughout the South East of England over the next two years, beginning with critical infrastructures in June 2012. The LOCKEN solution means that UK Power Networks can abandon its old access system and mechanical key locking and make the transition to a solution built around smart keys and electronic cylinders.

Tailored access control for maximum security

The solution deployed by LOCKEN includes its LPCB4 electronic high security padlocks, the most secure in the company’s range. This solution means that only registered and accredited technicians will be able to access work locations, and then only within previously defined timeslots.
Every lock opening or attempted opening will be tracked by the system for subsequent analysis.

Since LOCKEN solution is both a security system and a maintenance tool, the capital investment will deliver a return, because UK Power Networks will record a significant improvement in the productivity of operational maintenance management and optimized on-site working. The decision in favor of the Locken solution was also seen as a way of strengthening health and safety procedures for all the company’s employees and subcontractors.
